Binge eating linked to sleep issues
New research suggests a link between binge eating and sleep issues like insomnia and next-day tiredness. Research by Professor Amanda Salis, from the School of Human Sciences at the University of Western Australia, suggests a link between binge eating and sleep problems says the discovery could help improve treatments.  She says, We know that poor sleep does lead to p'oor health outcomes.' Binge eating is when a person consumes more food than would be considered appropriate in the circumstances.Professor Salis hopes the discovery will lead to better treatment if medical professionals are aware of the link.Article:  https://rb.gy/usdip

New Alzheimer's drug slows disease by a third
James Gallagher, BBC Health and science correspondent, reports, 'We could be entering the era of Alzheimer's treatments, after the second drug in under a year has been shown to slow the disease.'Gallagher quotes experts, saying we're now 'on the cusp' of drugs being available, something that had recently seemed "impossible".Eli Lilly has reported its drug - donanemab - slows the pace of Alzheimer's by about a third. Patients to teach empathy to make better doctors
Australian doctor Ben Bravery decided to become a doctor when a cancer patient in his 20s.  In his book, 'The patient doctor', he details his experience of medical school and then the day-to-day workings of hospitals, in which too many doctors do not view patients as their equals.  Doctors who get sick, learn how it feels to be a patient but Ben Bravery's idea is to teach empathy from the start of medical training with patients leading the way, 'They should be invited to lecture and teach students, as important as any professor of medicine'.Bulletin article:  https://rb.gy/wforb

Babies born using three people's DNA to prevent genetic diseases
On 10 May 2023 Britain's fertility regulator confirmed births of the UK's first babies created using an experimental technique combining DNA from three people, an effort to prevent the children from inheriting rare genetic diseases.In 2015, the UK was the first country to adopt legislation regulating methods to help prevent women with faulty mitochondria from passing defects on to their babies.  Genetic defects can result in muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, heart problems and intellectual disabilities.The procedure has its critics who say there is a need for close monitoring of children born using the technique.ABC News: https://rb.gy/q60yo

Australians to buy more medicines for less money
ABC reporters Stephanie Dalzeil and Emmy Groves write that the cost of hundreds of medicines will be halved for millions of Australians with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.  From September 2023, they will be able to buy 60 days' worth of medicine for the price of a single prescriptions.Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) chief executive Elizabeth Deveny said, 'Consumers are telling us that they can't afford the health care.'  They can't afford out-of-pocket costs for visits to GPs. See the ABC article and interview with Dr Stephen Duckett (Melbourne University): https://rb.gy/9fnmi
