Bin stickers to improve road safety
Large stickers on bins, which include photos of children stepping out onto the road, are aiming to cut residential traffic speed and keep drivers aware of possible hazards. If someone is exceeding the speed limit, these stickers should prompt them to immediately slow down. Even small changes in vehicle speed can have a dramatic impact on stopping distances. www.australianroadsafetyfoundation.com

A spa for babies
At this spa in Houston, Texas, babies aged between two weeks and eight months are put in waterproof nappies then fitted with a double-circle flotation device to support their head and neck. The floats allow the babies to move their arms and legs in the water as the bob and play for about 25 minutes. Mothers say the experience helps their babies relax and sleep better. www.floatbabies.com

GPS tracking devices to be used to reduce domestic violence
For the 1st time in NSW, under a trial being launched by the NSW Government, high-risk domestic violence offenders will be fitted with GPS tracking devices. Victims will also be given the option to carry their own GPS unit to alert authorities should the offender come within a certain distance. The victim would then be contacted by authorities and advised of the imminent danger. This new measure is not only for sentenced or paroled offenders, but could also be used to monitor compliance with bail conditions where a victim is protected by an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) with geographical restrictions. A magistrate could order the issuing of a GPS device, fitted with an alarm and worn on an offender's ankle, as part of a bail application or sentencing. A magistrate or state parole authority could also order it as part of parole conditions.
