For the 1st time in NSW, under a trial being launched by the NSW Government, high-risk domestic violence offenders will be fitted with GPS tracking devices. Victims will also be given the option to carry their own GPS unit to alert authorities should the offender come within a certain distance. The victim would then be contacted by authorities and advised of the imminent danger. This new measure is not only for sentenced or paroled offenders, but could also be used to monitor compliance with bail conditions where a victim is protected by an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) with geographical restrictions. A magistrate could order the issuing of a GPS device, fitted with an alarm and worn on an offender's ankle, as part of a bail application or sentencing. A magistrate or state parole authority could also order it as part of parole conditions.
