French defence authorities are aiming to improve public safety by challenging science fiction writers to dream up life-threatening plots for their army to solve. Writers have been briefed to create stories with challenging threats. It will then be up to the army and France?s other defence forces to devise counter moves to neutralise the threats, save lives and secure premises. Among the global risks most likely to dominate civil defence agendas in the near future are climate change, cyberattacks and natural disasters.

Actress Heather ‘Mitchell’s toast art has fans everywhere. Richard E Grant, who appears with Mitchell in the film Palm Beach, has a ‘toast’ portrait. Mitchell has been long experimenting with the lifespan of her artworks. The longevity of a toast’s life has been trial and error. Toasts from eight years ago are still going strong, some have cracked – and one gave birth to a family of moths. “The toasts I make now are preserved in a solution, so although there is no guarantee of lasting a lifetime, they should survive intact many, many years if not dropped.” https://bit.ly/2LSzidh

Formed in 2014, The Light Collective photographers are leaders in their field. They are renowned for their interpretive and artistic approach. In their latest exhibition and publication they have chosen to juxtapose the adjacent coal mining industry with the Great Barrier Reef as symbols for a global conversation to ask an important question; can we find a sustainable balance between the continued extraction and consumption of fossil fuels and the well-being of our great natural ecosystems? We are being asked to acknowledge the relationship between one of the potential causes of climate change. www.thelightcollective.com.au
