Fission vs fusion: an explainer
The release of the Oppenheimer film, the story of the director of the Manhattan Project, has prompted many people to go online and search for an explanation of the difference between fission and fusion, two fundamental scientific concepts. Nuclear fission is a reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei and releases energy. Nuclear fusion is the process by which two light atomic nuclei combine to form a single heavier one while releasing massive amounts of energy.See https://www.ansto.gov.au/news/fission-vs-fusion-an-explainer

Defendant to Defender and Author
‘Redeeming Justice’ is a memoir about Jarett Adams. He was seventeen when an all-white jury sentenced him to prison for the crime of rape, a crime he didn’t commit. After studying case law in prison, African American Jarrett Adams reached out to the Innocence Project. The case was heard in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and it was unanimously reversed. The case unraveled  due to new evidence that police withheld a statement from a college student that vindicated Adams from the crime. Now a pioneering lawyer specializing in  criminal defense, Adams  recalls the journey that led to his exoneration.

Hold the government to account when spending our money!
Disappointment is changing to anger as I read about wasted expenditures by our governments (state and federal).   Misdirected spending by the Defence Department is an excellent example of federal government waste, with poor strategic choices, lack of cost control and many purchases of equipment not fit for purpose.   The Victorian government's program of transport initiatives is another example of poor strategic decision-making and cost control. To hear the new Premier claim electoral endorsement was given to the unaffordable rail loop project and that cost blowouts were just increased investments makes my blood boil.   It is our money being wasted.

Nuclear fusion commercialised within 10 years
The Biden Administration hopes to create a commercial nuclear fusion facility within 10 years as part of the nation’s transition to clean energy. They aim to harness fusion as a carbon-free energy source that can power homes and businesses one day.Fusion works by pressing hydrogen atoms into each other with such force that they combine into helium, releasing enormous amounts of energy and heat. Unlike other nuclear reactions, it doesn’t create radioactive waste. Proponents of nuclear fusion hope it could one day displace fossil fuels and other traditional energy sources. But producing carbon-free energy that powers homes and businesses from fusion is still decades away.https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-n

Dealing with daylight saving
ABC digital news journalist Hanan Dervisevic writes about dealing with the start of daylight saving, which starts in Australia on the first weekend in October.  Dervisevic quotes Flinder University sleep expert Professor Emeritus Leon Lack, who suggests getting out into the sunshine first thing each morning leading up to the transition and on the Sunday and Monday mornings after the transition.  Professor Lack says, 'You can help yourself by exposure to bright light in the morning, so when you wake up, go for a walk or maybe water the garden.'  More information:  https://www.abc.net.au/news/hanan-dervisevic/102860096

siRNA for Treatment of SARS-CoV-2
RNA interference in animals involves small double-stranded RNA molecules called siRNA. These molecules are valuable tools for studying single gene function in both in vivo and in vitro settings and are also considered a promising class of therapeutics. SiRNA delivery systems fall into two categories: viral and non-viral, including peptides, polymers, and lipids. Studies using synthetic or plasmid-encoded siRNA show its antiviral effects against various viruses, including SARS-CoV.
