Data science to help battle fires
Researchers are building tools so officials can use data to learn how to rebuild communities devastated by natural disasters. Artificial intelligence lets computers predict and find insights from that data. By analyzing historical disaster information, publicly available census data and predictive models of risk and resilience, tools will be able to identify and prioritize key decisions, like what kinds of infrastructure investments to make. https://patch.com/california/across-ca/data-science-could-help-californians-battle-future-wildfires

Your roof covered in tiny sunflower-like solar collectors
Imagine your roof covered in tiny sunflower-like solar collectors that provide all the energy you need to run your home. Sound farfetched? Yesterday, maybe; today, not so much. Researchers at UCLA and the California Nanosystems Institute have developed technology that could make a roof of tiny sunflowers a reality. www.forbes.com/sites/kevinmurnane/2019/11/08/tiny-solar-collectors-that-track-the-movement-of-the-sun-could-power-your-home-one-day/

Improving emotional control to help with eating and gambling disorders
A group of researchers at the eating disorders unit at Bellvitge University hospital in Barcelona has developed a video game with built-in biofeedback that rewards emotional control in relation to anorexia. On a virtual tropical island, gamers enjoy sun and sand before experiencing stormy storms. The application is connected via Bluetooth to a single sensor that transmits heart rate and heart rate variability data heart rate from participants to the device. If participants are able to regulate their reactions and remain calm, their cardiac response is recorded by the sensor that rewards them, dispelling the storm. If they cannot regulate their emotions, the storm intensifies.
