CSIRO scientists have cracked cotton's molecular colour code, adding genes to make the plants produce a colour. While cotton is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, it still needs to be dyed, and the use of sometimes harmful chemical dyes is considered a blot on the industry's environmental copybook.A move away from synthetic materials in favour of cotton would be an important step in protecting the environment. Synthetic microfibres end up staying in the environment and can do more damage than regular plastic. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-06-27/csiro-scientists-grow-coloured-cotton/12395250
Forty years after the Iranian Revolution, two Australian artists were given a rare opportunity to paint a mural in the country's capital. They are the first international artists invited and commissioned by the Tehran City Council and the Australian Embassy to paint a mural in the country. After three weeks of traveling Iran and studying the culture, the artists were inspired to paint two men they met in a bazaar, who were repairing a traditional Persian carpet. The finished mural is a six-storey high, 40 metre wide painting aptly called "The Carpet Repairmen".https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/australian-artists-paint-mural-in-iran/10804654
