Giving children the confidence to be whatever they want to be
After 12 years leading one of the world?s most well-known food and beverage companies, Indra Nooyi will step down as chief executive of PepsiCo in October. Every night at the dinner table, her mother would ask the children to write a speech about what they would do if they were president, chief minister or prime minister?? every day would be a different world leader they?d be asked to play. At the end of dinner, they had to give the speech, and she decided who she was going to vote for. In that way she gave them the confidence to be whatever they wanted to be https://www.smartcompany.com.au/people-human-resources/leadership/eleven-pearls-wisdom-outgoing-pepsico-chief-indra-nooyi/?

A cotton shirt you don't have to iron
Imagine a shirt with the soft, natural feel of cotton but it doesn?t need to be ironed. Imagine as well active wear that breathes and is not smelly. While some synthetic fibres can do this, they are made from petrochemicals and every time you wash them, tiny microfibers of material are pulled free and enter our waterways. These fibres do not break down and can build up in the food chain. When you wash cotton, fibres are also shed but these are biodegradable and will break down rapidly. Some 100 % cotton products currently don't need ironing but these tend to have been treated with chemicals to give them their special properties. CSIRO is working on the solution. https://blog.csiro.au/best-of-both-whorls-cotton-with-the-benefits-of-synthetics/

3 simple ways to be more creative
1. Get to a work- or task-free space -the creative default network in your brain thrives when you aren't distracted 2. Try not to set any objective for your mind-wandering. Free yourself up to let your imagination roam to unlikely and unexpected places 3. Disrupt yourself: Add a dose of novelty to whatever task-free experience you're using in order to activate your brain's default network. Meet somebody outside your usual circle, go to a museum exhibition on your own. Novelty helps shake the brain out of its familiar cognitive patterns, opening up opportunities to engage in new ways of thinking and being. https://www.fastcompany.com/90204263/a-very-short-guide-to-the-most-creative-part-of-your-brain?

A humane prison
New Zealand has moved to tackle high rates of mental illness amongst its prison population with a brand new facility outside Auckland. The detention centre for high- and maximum-security males is swinging the pendulum back from punishment towards rehabilitation. It places emphasis on time spent outdoors in meditation, yoga, and gardens that the inmates will tend. It?s modelled on prisons in Scandinavia, Belgium and Germany. http://www.inkl.com/glance/news/yoga-herbs-and-sunshine-new-zealand-opens-humane-jail-for-most-violent-inmates?

A project that bridges the generation gap
A "living library" project in Malaysia's capital is sharing older people's knowledge with the young, to improve the lives of retired people and bridge Kuala Lumpur's generation gap. It links groups of students with retirement homes so older people can discuss the challenges they face living in the city and the students can offer solutions. The project is run by the World Economic Forum's Global Shapers Community, an international network of young professionals from business, academia and civil society, seeking to make a positive impact in local communities. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/06/kuala-lumpur-living-library-bridges-generation-gap-in-aging-asia
