Next generation AI
In May this year. Google revealed its AutoML project; artificial intelligence (AI) designed to help them create other AIs. Recently Google announced that AutoML has beaten the human AI engineers at their own game by building machine-learning software that's more efficient and powerful than the best human-designed systems. http://www.sciencealert.com/google-s-machine-learning-software-has-learned-to-replicate-itself?

Using AI to prevent teen suicides
An app has been developed that uses an algorithm to analyze speech and determine whether someone is likely to take their own life. It's called Spreading Activation Mobile or SAM and is being tested in a handful of Cincinnati schools in the US this year. It arrives at a time when researchers across the country are developing new forms of artificial intelligence that may forever change the way mental health issues are diagnosed and treated. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2017/09/25/teenage-suicide-is-extremely-difficult-to-predict-thats-why-some-experts-are-turning-to-machines-for-help/?

Using AI to detect diabetic eye disease
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious eye condition that can cause vision loss or even blindness. It affects about one in three people with diabetes. CSR researchers have just finished trialling a world-first, artificial intelligence-driven technology that enables GPs to scan people for DR. This technology detected signs of DR as effectively as the ophthalmologist. It could reduce unnecessary referrals, potentially reduce waiting periods for patients, and help ophthalmologists focus on patients who need treatment and surgery. https://blog.csiro.au/eyes-using-ai-detect-diabetic-eye-disease/
