IBD is incurable and Australia has one of the highest prevalence rates with one in 250 Australians diagnosed. There is a critical need for improved therapeutics that will extend periods of disease-free remission and improve quality of life for IBD patients.

Biotech companies such as Microba are working on research programs to develop diagnostics and therapeutics from the gut microbiome (gut bacteria). Using big data approaches, they have identified 20 bacterial species found in healthy individuals but rarely detected in Crohn’s Disease and/or Ulcerative Colitis.

19 May is World IBD Day and May is IBD Awareness Month.
