Nanophotonics expert, Professor Xiaoke Yi is leading a team of medical and engineering researchers at the University of Sydney?s School of Electrical and Information Engineering to develop the breath ketone analyser. The device aims to help people with type 1 diabetes to detect and manage life-threatening ketoacidosis which occurs due to the liver producing high levels of ketones in response to low insulin levels. Professor Yi says that the process to use the device will be as simple as roadside breath testing, where blood ketone levels can be calculated by measuring the concentration of acetone in a patient?s breath. Yi?s team are working on a more compact and low-cost solution into the future. |
