A race to build the world's first practical quantum computer
Quantum computing is expected to have a revolutionary impact in many industries including finance, resource extraction, health, pharmaceuticals, logistics and data. Quantum computers will be able to solve some types of problems millions of times faster than conventional computers. Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Ltd, will have a key goal of retaining IP in Australia and boosting new industries based around quantum computing and other quantum spin-offs. http://www.afr.com/technology/unsw-joins-with-government-and-business-to-keep-quantum-computing-technology-in-australia-20170821-gy0tki?

Green roofs for city streets
Green roofs are a green infrastructure (GI) option that can be applied to virtually any rooftop given weight load capacity. The benefits of green roofs extend far beyond their obvious aesthetic appeal. They can capture 70 per cent of rainfall over a given time, relieving underground stormwater systems and releasing the rain water back into the atmosphere. http://www.inkl.com/newsletters/morning-edition/news/how-green-roofs-can-help-cities-sponge-away-excess-stormwater?

A fabric that's tougher than metal
Scientists have created a new hydrogel material reinforced with fibres that they say is up to five times harder to break than carbon steel ? but still easy to bend and stretch. That combination of properties means the new fabric could be used as the basis for artificial ligaments and tendons designed to help the body heal, or in manufacturing where a very tough but elastic material is needed. Uses could include sports clothing, helmets or bulletproof vests. https://www.global.hokudai.ac.jp/blog/new-tougher-than-metal-fiber-reinforced-hydrogels/

Warmth you can control
Polar Seal has designed wearable clothing based on technology used to keep jet fighter pilots warm. The lightweight, flexible fabrics contain two heating elements, one in the upper back and one in the lower back, placed to warm your core quickly while being integrated into the fabric to maintain style. https://www.polarseal.me/

A keyless smart door lock
With the Otto system, the lock senses your phone and unlocks the door at the touch of a button. If the phone runs out of battery, there is a pin entry alternative. You can also assign limited-time pins to let housekeepers, delivery people, and dog walkers in at pre-specified times, but can revoke access outside those time windows.?https://www.meetotto.com/

3D solar towers offer up to 20 x more energy
According to MIT researchers 3D solar towers can generate anywhere from double up to 20 times the amount of energy as flat solar panels with the same base area. These 3D designs increase electricity output because their vertical surfaces allow them to capture sunlight even when the sun is closest to the horizon during mornings, evenings and winter and when sunlight is partially obstructed by shadows or cloud cover. http://news.mit.edu/2012/three-dimensional-solar-energy-0327
