A platform to choose English names for Chinese babies
A?growing number of Chinese parents are choosing English names for their children in the hope of helping them gain a future foothold in the West. A British schoolgirl recognised this trend on a holiday in China as well as that embarrassing names were being selected. The confusion is partly the result of Chinese government censorship of the internet restricting its citizens' understanding of western cultural references. So she set up a website to suggest culturally appropriate English names for prospective parents by matching the meaning of the name to the family's ideals and aspirations for their children. In 6 months her site had named more than 232,000 babies. www.SpecialName.cn

A program to develop big sci-tech ideas
ON Prime is a CSIRO program designed to create connections between research, science and business to develop big sci-tech ideas. More than 160 researchers from across Australia have been selected for ON Prime in teams. These teams will be helped to validate their science and technology ideas in the lab as well as to commercialise them. They will commence an eight-week program in one of five ON Prime 'hubs' across the country this week, supported by funds provided through the National Innovation and Science Agenda. I'm honored to be chosen as a mentor for the BiomarX team which has identified a new non-invasive diagnostic test that can detect the presence of endometrial cancer. http://www.csiro.au/en/News/News-releases/2016/Big-sci-tech-ideas-to-go-from-lab-to-mark

School replaces detention with meditation
Instead of punishing disruptive kids or sending them to the principal's office, this school has created the Mindful Moment Room which looks nothing like a detention room. It's filled with lamps, decorations, and plush purple pillows. Misbehaving kids are encouraged to sit in the room and go through practices like breathing or meditation, helping them calm down. They're also asked to talk about what happened and it's getting great results. http://www.upworthy.com/this-school-replaced-detention-with-meditation-the-results-are-stunning?c=ufb1
