AI captures $billions from tax cheats
The Australian Taxation Office has used artificial intelligence on an industrial scale to identify more than $530 million of unpaid tax bills and stop $2.5 billion being fraudulently claimed.ATO deputy commissioner Marek Rucinski said the agency’s deep learning models had helped his staff identify $295 million in superannuation guarantee underpayments, and natural language models had scoured leaked documents, such as the Panama Papers, to detect $242 million owed by tax evaders since 2018.https://www.afr.com/technology/ato-captures-billions-of-dollars-from-tax-cheats-with-ai-20230727-p5drnf?btis

Freedoms worth Fighting for
Aggressors misjudge free people, thinking they will not stand up for their values. The Ukraine war and the severe tensions in the Taiwan Straits offer stark reminders that security of territory, culture, prosperity or liberal pluralist social conditions are just one despot, invasion or campaign of intervention away from us on any day. The men and women of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are operating in training conditions and strategic landscapes that are full of high level cyber threat, peer to peer potential warfare and more. However they are up to it, being both progressive and professional.

Coping in a time of Polycrisis
Adam Tooze of Columbia University has looked at the complexity of challenges facing the global community: economics, politics, geopolitics, and environmental issues overlap to produce a polycriris.   “As publics lose perspective, forfeit historical knowledge, rely on self-reinforcing media and prioritise emotion over reason, the distrust between the people and the governing class will become entrenched. Australia has this problem to a lesser extent than other democracies but our problem is real and serious.” (Paul Kelly, The Australian)Australian politicians must grasp this complexity and fully engage the community to ensure social cohesion and the survival of our democracy.
