Farm It Forward is a social enterprise connecting Blue Mountains
landowners and local young people who are passionate about growing food.
The project develops skills and creates training and job opportunities,
while tackling social isolation and giving meaning to life, issues for
young and old, isolated and less mobile people.
Consider growing Youlk, with its crisp apple-like texture, golden potato colour and hints of
carrot and sweet eucalypt flavour, it makes a tasty ingredient for
salads, stews, pies, gratin, cakes and other dishes — or simply roasted,
baked or fried with a little butter and salt. Well adapted to the WA environment, this plant can thrive under dry
conditions in nutrient-poor, sandy soils. However, for best results in a
backyard garden, grow your Youlk in full sun or part shade, in loamy
soil, and water generously during Summer. To learn more about Youlk and other bushfoods go to www.tuckerbush.com.au
BirdLife South Africa is working to create new colonies of penguins at quiet beaches in Cape Town by using decoy penguin sculptures. Most seabirds breed in colonies and will only do so if they feel safe. The decoys fool birds into thinking that other birds are already breeding thereAfrican penguin numbers have been on a decrease over the last 60 years and the West Coast of South Africa have suffered the most. They have seen an over 60% decrease in the last 20 years due to decreases in the availability of their preferred prey, which is sardines and anchovies.www.goodthingsguy.com/environment/decoy-penguins-new-colonies/
