Future Crime Prediction Engine
Social scientists from the University of Chicago have formulated an algorithm that claims 90% accuracy in forecasting crime - detecting patterns of time to predict future events. This isn't the first algorithm to look at this problem, but previous models identified emerging 'hotspots' which was subject to bias. The new model claims to be able to ask questions like 'what happens to the crime rate if property crimes increase?'... which could be a better measure. research paper > https://www.researchgate.net/publication/361651657_Event-level_prediction_of_urban_crime_reveals_a_signature_of_enforcement_bias_in_US_citiesimage credit: researchers

AI to help prevent Data Centre safety issues
"In June 2015, 5 people had to be taken to a hospital after a chlorine gas leak at an [US-based] Apple data center". Could this be prevented in future? Note. Chlorine is used by many to sterilize the water circulated through liquid cooling systems in DCs. Microsoft, Apple and other technology leaders are looking to the metaverse and AI to help improve safety conditions in Data Centres. Early in the test phase yet, but could these solutions and data points improve working conditions for team members?https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/18/microsoft-and-meta-join-google-in-using-ai-to-help-run-their-data-centers/Image credit: ITnews and Google

AI is helping farmers reduce food waste with their phones
15.3% of farm produce is going to waste even before leaving the farm. That's 1.2 billion tonnes per year. A $20 device that attaches to your smartphone is set to solve this problem for good. A tiny microscope reduces disturbances when scanning food samples and empowers the app-based AI to reach 90% accuracy in detecting disease or parasites with less than 50 pictures. Giving farmers anywhere around the globe certainty that the quality of their produce meets customer requirements and can go into supermarket shelves instead of the garbage dump.https://www.gomicro.co
