Smells may be used as a potential treatment to reduce depression.

Dr. Kymberly Young’s research study found that scents trigger more specific and vivid memories in depressed individuals compared to word cues.


This may lead to new interventions using familiar smells in the breaking of negative thought cycles by directly engaging the amygdala through olfactory prompting.


However - further research is required.
