The lives of many people who fatally drown in rips, rivers and other waterways might be saved if they are taught to float to survive.
Most rip currents are recirculating and will bring you back to a sandbar, or to shore.
Floating gives swimmers of all levels a chance to assess where and how a rip is flowing, conserve energy and assess the situation. More competent swimmers may then decide to swim parallel to the beach to breaking waves.
