In this documentary Michael Moore looks at the benefits of schooling in France, Finland and Slovenia. In Italy, he marvels at how workers enjoy reasonable hours and generous vacation time. In Portugal, he notes the effects of the decriminalization of drugs. Norway shows him a jail system that focusses on rehabilitation and results in low recidivism. In Iceland he sees how bankers were prosecuted after the financial crisis and how women now have equality to the benefit of society. He's told that many of these ideas came from the US which has taken a different path.

Minu Pauline, owner of the Pappadavada restaurant, in Kochi, southern India, was moved to combat both food waste and hunger after seeing people scavanging waste food from bins, so she put a fridge outside her restaurant. The fridge nicknamed nanma maram, meaning tree of goodness began as a place people in need could pick up excess food from the restaurant. It's now become a community hub, with people from across town donating to it and the idea is being implemented around the world.

The French believe that teaching healthy eating routines to children is a priority, along with reading. School lunch menus are planned in advance and children are served 3-4 course meals with proper cutlery and water, instead of bringing their own lunch to school. Historically, France has been known for its slender people and longevity. Prisons in Norway mimic the outside world as much as possible to prepare inmates for freedom. At this high security prison Halden, rooms include en-suite bathrooms with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs. Activities are arranged 8am to 8pm and include sports and skills training. The guards' job description says they must motivate the inmate "so that his sentence is as meaningful, enlightening and rehabilitating as possible." Half the guards are women. Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world at 20%.
