Family days for inmates at a Perth prison are encouraging fathers to develop stronger bonds with their children. These days are arranged in conjunction with Save The Children and are a key part of showing the young men the positive side of family and community to help prevent them reoffending. I visited and was told that the only way these young men, largely from extremely difficult backgrounds, could survive in life was to appear tough, and the only time they could let down this guard was with their children, which was beneficial for both them and their children.?The prison, Wandoo Reintegration Facility is a minimum-security prison that houses 77 inmates aged between 18 and 28.
A new Australian startup allows you to donate to many charities, either collectively or individually, simply by shopping online at many retailers. After you register you pay the same price as you would if you visited the retailer's site directly. The money that's donated to your cause is a commission that the retailer pays Folo for directing a sale to their website. www.folo.world
Pledge 1 percent is dedicated to making the community a key stakeholder in every business. It encourages individuals and companies to pledge 1% of equity, product, and employee time for their communities based on the premise that companies and employees today want to have a positive impact on the world. The Pledge 1 percent website enables visitors to pledge equity, employee time and/or product directly on the site. Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquahar wants every start-up business to commit to giving employee time, equity and funds to charity. He and a program backed by salesforce.com have signed up more than 600 businesses in the past 18 months. The easiest time to pledge is when companies are startups and their value is unknown. IdeaSpies has committed. www.Pledge1percent.org
