Unlocking the hydrogen in plastic waste

The density of hydrogen in plastic bags is about 14 per cent by weight. Current methods for unlocking that hydrogen are energy intensive and multi-staged.

Chemists at the University of Oxford have identified a possible single-step, lower energy intensive process which utilises microwaves and a catalyst of iron oxide and aluminium oxide. 

Even more impressive, the process recovered 97% of the hydrogen in the plastic within seconds.

Plans are underway for larger scale testing of the process.
