Plarn Craft Kit - a convenient way to repurpose plastic bags

post-image
I intend to find a solution to create a second life for plastic bags and want to create a solution to the ongoing problem of plastic pollution by creating a product that's marketable and user friendly. I have decided to create a Plarn (plastic yarn) Crochet Craft Kit, in order for consumers to be able to upcycle existing plastic bags that they own. This kit will provide instructions on how to crochet a reusable tote bag, made from recycled plastic bags. At this stage of my project, I'm asking for thoughts or inputs to either expand or enhance my project.

What do you think?

Hi GI, Fantastic idea to keep plastic bags out of the environment where they are potentially very harmful. Even in landfills, plastic bags can endanger the environment. Making reusable tote bags from unwanted plastic bags is a great idea because it keeps the precious resources in use and promotes the important 'reuse' model - both of which are central principles to the circular economy. Perhaps there's end markets for your products in online stores like Etsy and Gum Tree? Crochet is a trending thing right now! Well done and all the best with your project :)

I agree with the previous comment! I've checked other ideas on IdeaSpies that deal with the plastic problem and yours looks novel https://ideaspies.com/search?q=plastic

Great idea GI, check out BoxHead Plastics. An awesome little start up doing amazing things. https://www.boxheadplastics.com/ Bec would love to hear about your idea or even look for ways to see if you could join forces.

I think this is a great idea, some companies who are working with soft plastics are Plastic Forest (David Hodge) look him up on linkedin. Replas (Thomas Anderson) also look him up on linkedin. Also the founder of Replas Mark Yates is a good one to connect with.

You are embarking on a very very tough journey. Try and keep the process as simple as possible, what you want is to demonstrate that there is opportunity, you dont need to solve the problem.

I think the concept is good, something kids and families can do at home. It can be packaged up nicely, and people will get a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of doing something good for the environment once they have knitted their item

Also google it, there is a load of information on the net about working with Plarn, here is an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7kwgFOWscY

Get in contact if you would like to run through some product ideas, packaging and marketing. One thing you will need is a budget, at least a small one.

Thank you for your feedback! I'll definitely be considering the possible end markets of my product within the completion of my design project, especially on platforms like Etsy and Gumtree.

I haven't come across a 'yarn' as such, but I've seen a variety of weaving techniques used with plastic bags ( just one example here https://www.facebook.com/CreswickMatsForTheHomeless/ ) which I'm sure you've already explored! Another potential option to explore could be a form of extrusion, however this creates more of a filament, and capability would be limited to those who have access to machines

UpRising @ 2022.07.22 2:03 AM

Good morning UpRising Designers- Congratulations on all the hard work you have done with your MDP, your projects are looking amazing. Some big news to help you get the rest of the way.

Alliance members will soon be voting on three projects that really resonate with them. There is no set criteria. I will simply ask them to consider all of the projects regardless of the number of likes the project has received and vote for a project that they consider important.

Last month Good Design Australia joined UpRising and I am very excited to announce that this year’s top three UpRising design students will be invited to attend the Good Design Awards ceremony in September, held at the ICC.

Alliance members will be asked to nominate their top three projects, awarding 3 points for a design project that resonates with them the most, two points for the next, 1 point for a third project. Points will be tallied and the three students with the highest points invited to attend this year’s Good Design Awards Ceremony.

I ask that before the 30th July you update your post with an image that combines a picture of your early prototype with an image of your finished projects.

Voting opens Monday 1st August

Voting closes Friday 19th August

Friday 26th August  3 Recipients announced via zoom

Friday 2nd September Recipients RSVP closes

Friday 16 September 2022 Good Design Awards Ceremony

On Friday 26th August 4pm I will announce the top three highest scoring Major Design student projects via Zoom with these students invited to attend this year's prestigious Good Design Australia Awards Ceremony on Friday the 16th Sept. The GDA Awards event will be an incredible way for HSC design students to connect with professionals in industry and a great opportunity to give you a seat at the table at the heart of good design here in Australia.

Wishing you all the best with the completion of your MDPs your teachers and families must be very proud of you.

UpRising @ 2022.08.23 2:03 AM

Congratulations to all who took part in this year’s UpRising. If you could spend just 2 minutes completing these three questions that would be heaps tops.
