Another way to make faster decisions is the 40/70 rule popularised by former Secretary of State Colin Powell. The rule says that leaders should be making decisions when they have 40-70% of the information needed.

Make a decision with less than 40%, the rule says, and you’re shooting from the hip. Waiting until you have more than 70% of the information and you’ve waited too long- you may now become indecisive and overwhelmed and you could risk the productivity of the entire organisation.

Does your organisation make decisions in ways like these? Are they prepared to test or pilot new ideas?
