With the recent increases in social support spending, a lot is being written about what needs to be done about debt levels and the direction of Australia’s fiscal health.

This discussion gives us as citizens a great opportunity to contribute to a clearer definition of the type of country we wish to be, and how this should be funded.

If we want: ‘A truly participative liberal democracy that offers equal opportunity, cares for the less fortunate and encourages individual endeavour’.

Then let’s have a discussion on the ‘how’. A great topic for a citizen’s jury!

Just as Ireland (starting in 2016) used a convention and citizens' juries to work through their complex governance issues, Australia could too!

The key is to have a sound representation of the population (not dominated by the great, good, organised or political) meet and have fact-based discussions of the critical issues, with complete transparency to the overall community. The objective is to determine common interest solutions where people in the community feel people like them have contributed to the deliberations and that the majority can accept as balanced and fair. Such an outcome gives politicians a clear view of what to do ... and an "if not - why not" challenge!

Constitutional Law expert and Scientia Professor George Williams has proposed another exciting idea for Australia’s governance. That is, to explore the opportunities our constitution offers and that the conventions with the Crown provide for selecting and appointing our Governor General. Prof Williams raises several interesting issues regarding the potential powers of the position and alternative ways of selecting and appointing a Governor General. Public discourse over these issues could catalyse community interest in our country’s governance and help us evaluate options for constitutional refreshment and our head of state's role, status and powers.
