Graphene from Plastic Waste

A new process introduced by Rice University can turn bulk quantities of plastic into graphene for a fraction of the cost used by other methods. It involves exposing the waste to high-intensity alternating electrical pulses.

Graphene can be used in a variety of applications to enhance electronics, composites, even concrete. Graphene can command $67,000 to $200,000 per ton, while recycled plastic pellets attract only about $2000 per tonne. Producing high quality graphene from plastic waste at a low cost should help drive a high-value circular economy.
