Flooded coal mines provide district heating

post-image

The Earth's natural heat means even abandoned coal mines can provide geothermal options. And in the UK, at Gateshead the Council is repurposing abandoned mine workings to provide district heating for up to 5000 homes via a super-sized heat exchange and renewable energy driven heat pump system. District heating systems in the UK only accounts for around 2% of heating, so much more can be done. And the beauty is it is all being done with existing technologies, harnessed at scale to deliver energy decarbonisation to a large number of users all at once.
