Every Parliamentary Bill should have a Statement of Public Interest

The Evidence-Based Policy Research Project facilitated by the newDemocracy Foundation has made progress in New South Wales.

After examining a proposal for a Green and White Paper process to precede all contentious bills, the Upper House Procedures Committee agreed instead to suggest to the State Government that a Statement of Public Interest accompany every bill tabled in parliament.

Such a Statement would answer six basic public interest questions before any legislation was debated and passed in Parliament. The questions cover: Need; Objectives; Options; Analysis; Pathway and Consultation.
