Citizens Assemblies/Juries are being used to resolve challenging issues – why can’t we?

99 citizens from all over Denmark have spent four months discussing possible solutions to address climate issues in a citizens' assembly. On 10 February 2022, the randomly selected participants presented concrete recommendations and four key messages to the Danish Parliament for ambitious action.

Having held a successful "citizens assembly" on climate change the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has proposed the use of a "citizens' convention" to resolve assisted dying laws in France

How are the assemblies being funded?

Funding has been predominantly by governments who see the benefit in an inclusive dialogue with the electorate. When properly structured and the deliberations widely publicised, these assemblies help communities realise and support "common good" approaches to "wicked problems".

Even when philanthropists have offered to fund such approaches in Australia, our federal politicians have refused to embrace the concept. Why?

That is, to explore the opportunities our constitution offers and that the conventions with the Crown provide for selecting and appointing our Governor General. Prof Williams raises several interesting issues regarding the potential powers of the position and alternative ways of selecting and appointing a Governor General. Public discourse over these issues could catalyse community interest in our country’s governance and help us evaluate options for constitutional refreshment and our head of state's role, status and powers.
