This "Prawn Plastic” could be used for all sorts of packaging because it is transparent, flexible, durable and insoluble. The product has been developed by mixing a protein from a silk cocoon protein and an element from prawn shells. The exoskeleton of prawns is rich in nitrogen and, when the plastic breaks down, it releases this vital agricultural nutrient back into nature.
The plastic has been developed by 17 year old Angelina Arora from Australia. Several companies are interested in her invention and hopefully, the product will be available for commercial use in the near future.
