Australia's poo-power

In what is reported to be an Australian first, Logan City Council (Queensland) is implementing a process to turn sewage into energy & biochar at Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Biosolids are dewatered, dried and treated at high temperatures to release biogas, which is then used to further heat the remaining biosolids to make biochar, a soil improver used in the agricultural sector.

The process is estimated to also reduce the volume of biosolids by 90%, saving local ratepayers $500,000 and cutting 4800 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
