Ammonia Engine

post-image

German companies and researchers, led by MAN Energy Solutions, are working on a medium speed engine that can burn both diesel and ammonia. Ammonia is made from hydrogen through the Haber-Bosch at industrial scale and is a better energy carrier than hydrogen due to its high stability and energy density. An ammonia engine makes it possible to direct use of ammonia as power fuels by the transport sector for higher energy efficiency without converting it back to hydrogen.

Hi Thomas - interesting piece. Are you aware of any emissions studies comparing maritime ships on LNG vs this dual-fuel diesel/ (green) ammonia mix?  Best K

Hi Kylie, good question as LNG is the other front runner to decarbonise maritime emissions. Remembering LNG is 20/30% less emissions than diesel so the duel engine need to hit that target - but also there are work around bio/LNG blending option for ships.
