A new exhibition dedicated to two famous Women Renaissance Painters

post-image

Born in 16th-century Italy about 20 years apart, Lavinia Fontana and Sofonisba Anguissola learned to paint and earned widespread acclaim for their work. From kings to popes, people knew their names. Then they were forgotten.

Anguissola’s works were even misattributed to male artists like Titian.

Now, the Prado Museum in Spain, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, has a new exhibition wholly dedicated to their work and lives  called “A Tale of Two Women Painters.”

Is it not strange that even in this modern feminist supporting age that two such fine painters should still be unknown. I have much interest in art of this period and yet I have never heard of these two significantly talented female painters.
