A Goodes Start- Monuments to Black Heroes

post-image

There's a potent message in the mural of Indigenous AFL legend Adam Goodes that appeared – as big as a two-storey house – on an inner-Sydney building on Thursday. Amid the global Black Lives Matter protests, and the tearing down of statues of once-feted slave-traders and racists, here was the making of a monument to a black hero. A living Australian hero.

Totally agree. Statues might have been erected as monuments, but in time provide a stimulus to learn about history from a place of evolved values and beliefs. From both perspectives (monument and history teacher) we are devoid of equivalent dedications to Indigenous leaders and community members. Would love to see Indigenous communities given the opportunity and funding to be recognised to the extent that they wish to be and in ways that are appropriate to them.

Yes murals are a great way to celebrate community leaders- this mural in my suburb CBD celebrates a few including an indigenous leader https://www.ideaspies.com/posts/proud-of-our-elders

I hope you share these posts so more communities see the idea and adopt it.
